Surat (along with Navsari) is the capital of India’s diamond industry. Surat is located some 250 kilometers north of Bombay. The diamond industry of Surat accounts for around USD 10 billion of exports (Rs 50,000 crores). It employs over 600,000 people. The diamond industry of Surat accounts for 85% of the total diamond exports of India and 90 per cent of the world’s diamonds are processed in Surat
The diamond industry of Surat dates back to 1965
Rough diamonds are mined in primarily in Angola, Botswana, Namibia and Russia. These are then exported to Antwerp, Belgium, which is the world’s diamond trade hub
The processed diamonds are exported to the following major destinations:
- United States of America
- Japan
- Belgium
- Hong Kong
- Switzerland
- Thailand
